Independent Mail: New Powdersville library finally a reality

Independent Mail: New Powdersville library finally a reality
By Crystal Boyles (Contact)

More than 30 years ago, Carl Stone began dreaming about opening a library branch in Powdersville.

On Sunday afternoon, the former Anderson County Library System director was able to walk into that dream, which officially has become a reality.

"It's very gratifying," Mr. Stone said. "It's amazing. You dream about doing things and then 30, 40 years later they come to fruition."

The 12,000-square-foot library has room for 40,000 volumes, a huge step up from the old 2,400-square-foot Powdersville Library, which only held about 15,000 volumes.

In addition, the Powdersville Library and Government Center will house the Powdersville magistrate's office, the treasurer's office and the building and codes office.

The who's who of Anderson County congregated outside the new Powdersville Library and Government Center on Sunday afternoon for the official ribbon cutting and dedication.

Approximately 54 white chairs sat in rows of seven just outside the front doors, but that wasn't nearly enough for the hundred-plus people who gathered to get a first glimpse.

The building was dedicated to state Rep. Daniel T. Cooper and will bear his name. A meeting room just inside to the right is dedicated to the Cely family, longtime Powdersville residents. The land where the building now sits was once part of the Cely family land.

Rep. Cooper said when he received the phone call that the building would bear his name, he thought the caller was kidding. The caller wasn't, and the facility is something the community has needed, he said.

"It's something that's been missing, especially the meeting room," Rep. Cooper said.
