Cooper Named Legislator of the Year by South Carolina Dental Association
Rep. Dan Cooper has been selected as 2009 Legislator of the Year by the S.C. Dental Association (SCDA). The award was presented to Cooper by Dr. Nick Hopkins at the October 20 meeting of the Anderson County Dental Society.
According to SCDA Executive Director Phil Latham, Cooper was chosen for the award because he was instrumental in the passage of several key bills during the 2009 legislative session. "We choose a legislator every year who goes above and beyond to support the profession of dentistry in South Carolina," Latham said. "This year, Rep. Dan Cooper sponsored several important bills that will help the dental profession. He was also instrumental in overriding some of the governor's vetoes that would have hurt SCDA members." For example, Latham notes, Cooper supported the Rural Dental Incentive Program, which assists dentists in repaying educational loans so they can work in underserved areas of the state or become full-time faculty at MUSC College of Dental Medicine. About SCDA Established in 1869, the South Carolina Dental Association (SCDA) represents and serves over 1730 member dentists in South Carolina. It is a non-profit association that provides services such as lobbying, legal counsel, continuing education opportunities, publications, insurance services, and practitioner networking and legislative events.
