Greenville News: Thumbs up: Rep. Cooper honored

Thumbs Up to Rep. Dan Cooper, a Republican from Anderson County, for earning the coveted David Wilkins Award for Legislative Excellence. Wilkins, of course, is the Greenville County leader who served more than two decades in the state House of Representatives, also served as Speaker of the House, and became U.S. ambassador to Canada during President George W. Bush's term. Wilkins said of his former colleague who now chairs the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, “He's done a great job.” And in a moment of understatement given the deep state budget cuts, Wilkins also was quoted as saying that Cooper is “in one of the toughest positions in state government” by chairing the committee that drafts the state budget and sitting on the five-member state Budget and Control Board that has been forced to make several mid-year budget cuts.
